Cysts & Lipomas Q & A

What are cysts and lipomas?

Cysts and lipomas are benign masses that grow just under the skin. Cysts are filled with fluid, protein, or air, while lipomas are filled with fat. Both growths can develop anywhere on the body and aren’t typically medically harmful. But they can feel uncomfortable or look unattractive.

Cysts and lipomas are firm but moveable under the skin. They grow slowly and don’t usually require treatment.

When should I have cysts and lipomas treated?

If you have a cyst or lipoma, have it diagnosed. These growths can be but rarely are signs of more severe conditions.

A small cyst or lipoma that doesn’t bother you doesn’t need to be removed. Cysts sometimes go away independently, but lipomas won’t shrink without treatment.

If a cyst or lipoma rubs against your clothing or jewelry, causes pain or discomfort with pressure or can be seen by others, your provider might recommend removing it.

What is the treatment for cysts and lipomas?

Your provider will usually recommend surgical excision (removal). The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under a local anesthetic. This means you get to go home to recover.

Some cysts are best treated by draining or injecting them with corticosteroids, reducing inflammation.

Your provider might also recommend liposuction to remove a lipoma. During this procedure, they insert a long, thin needle into the growth and suction out the fatty tissue.

Why do cysts and lipomas develop?

Cysts are caused by genetics, overuse, inflammation, infection, or trauma. The reason lipomas grow isn’t entirely clear, but they might be related to certain diseases and genetics. You’re more likely to develop one if someone in your family has one.

Do cysts and lipomas return after removal?

Surgical excision prevents cysts and lipomas from returning. During your treatment, the doctor removes the cyst’s discharge and walls to discourage it from regrowing.

Lipomas can appear on other parts of your body but not usually in the places from which they were initially removed.
