You might be surprised to discover that some of the most innocuous habits could actually be aging you. Preventing fine lines and wrinkles is certainly easier than trying to treat them once they form. While wrinkles are a normal part of life and aging, there are things you can do each and everyday to keep your skin looking young and healthy so you can knock a few years off your age and people will be none the wiser.

Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen each and every day without fail is probably one of the best things you can do to keep your skin looking and feeling its best. Not only does exposing skin to the sun’s rays cause sun damage and increase your risk for skin cancer, it can also cause premature lines and wrinkles. To protect your skin from the sun, always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 every day (even in the winter and on cloudy days).

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is so very important and yet not enough of us get quality sleep every night. Nights of tossing and turning won’t just leave you grumpy, tired and mentally foggy, it can also lead to wrinkles. That’s because a lack of sleep can actually accelerate the signs of aging and can also affect the skin’s ability to repair itself every night. Most adults require anywhere from 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Are you getting your beauty sleep?

Stay Hydrated

Did you know that as many as 75 percent of US adults suffer from chronic dehydration? This statistic is startlingly and could have a serious impact not just on your health but also on the health and appearance of your skin. If like most people you aren’t getting more than 2.5 cups of water a day, it’s important that you up your water intake to at least 8 8-ounce glasses per day (and even more if you’re active). Staying hydrated keeps the skin looking plump and radiant (and who doesn’t want that?).

Keep Skin Moisturized

Dry skin can also leave you prone to those early signs of aging, so it’s important that you keep skin supple and hydrated. Everyone should use a moisturizer every day, which can improve skin’s glow and also reduce the appearance of facial lines. Those dealing with more severe dry skin may need to turn to their dermatologist for more intense moisturizers.

Sleep on Your Back

If you find yourself snuggling with your pillow night after night you may soon notice fine lines developing on your face as a result. Just changing your sleep position alone can easily prevent these “sleep wrinkles”. If you want to reduce wrinkles on your face avoid sleeping on your side or stomach and sleep on your back instead.

Of course, a dermatologist offers a wide range of cosmetic treatments that can also reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. From Botox and dermal fillers to customized facials, laser treatments and chemical peels, there are many options out there to help you achieve a younger appearance. Talk to your dermatologist today about ways to prevent and treat wrinkles.

The telltale signs of aging skin—wrinkles, puffy eyes, age spots—may start to appear as we grow older. We can’t fight the aging process, but we can take steps now to help reduce and prevent wrinkles from appearing prematurely.

Many factors can contribute to the onset of wrinkles, which are frequently produced by years of unprotected sun exposure in combination with each person’s unique genetic predisposition. Wrinkles are a by-product of the aging process. As we age, our skin loses its elasticity, is less capable of retaining moisture and is slower to heal.  All of these contribute to the development of wrinkles and sagging skin.

How Can I Slow the Progression of Wrinkles?

Daily skincare and proper sun protection are important factors in slowing the aging process, diminishing fine lines and minimizing wrinkles.

  • Take your vitamins.  Many vitamins are good for the skin. Vitamin C, a natural antioxidant found in citrus fruits and dark green leafy vegetables, can help reduce the appearance of sun damage.
  • Apply sunscreen.  Protecting yourself from sun exposure can help prevent the progression of fine lines. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying a sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 to protect against harmful UV rays.
  • Moisturize.  Dry skin causes the skin to look dull and aged. To prevent dry skin, apply moisturizer every day.
  • Get your beauty sleep.  When your body doesn’t get enough sleep, it produces excess cortisol, a hormone that breaks down skin cells. Keep your skin looking and feeling young by getting at least seven hours of sleep every night.
  • Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds emit harmful UVA rays and are never 'safe' alternatives to the sun.
  • Take care of your hands. Our hands are often the first part of our body to reveal signs of aging, as they are the most used and exposed parts of the body. Protect the hands by wearing gloves, moisturizing and applying sunscreen.
  • Quit smoking.  Smoking may damage more than your lungs—it causes skin aging and wrinkles around the mouth.

Like it or not, wrinkles are a natural part of aging. Even the most diligent skincare regimen or the most expensive wrinkle cream won’t totally eliminate your fine lines. You can significantly reduce the appearance of your wrinkles, however. Start taking care of your skin now, embrace your age and love the skin you’re in!

Are you ready to find out if Botox is the right cosmetic treatment for you?botox

Whenever you smile do you notice pesky wrinkles across your face? While some people are proud of the lines and wrinkles they have, most people find them to be a dead giveaway of their age. If you want to smooth away these wrinkles, our Ponte Vedra Beach and Jacksonville, FL, dermatologist, Dr. Sanjiva Goyal, has just the cosmetic treatment you’ve been looking for.

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injection that uses a purified form of botulinum toxin A. When injected into the skin, this toxin works to block messages sent to the muscles that tell them to contract. As a result, the muscles are temporarily paralyzed, causing lines and wrinkles in that area to soften. Botox has been a great option for many people in Ponte Vedra Beach and Jacksonville looking to treat mild-to-severe dynamic facial wrinkles.

What are the benefits of choosing Botox?

There are many advantages to choosing Botox over other cosmetic treatments including:

Efficiency: Most people don’t have a lot of time in their schedules to sit in the office for hours on end or to continue coming back regularly. With Botox, you can come into our office for treatment and leave just a few minutes later. Administering Botox injections is quick and easy.

Practically Painless: When people hear the word “needles” they often feel a bit anxious about getting this procedure, but these needles aren’t anything like the needles you get for immunizations. These needles are much thinner and less invasive, which means that people often don’t feel much more than a slight pinch when the needles enter the skin. Plus, we can apply a topical anesthetic to the skin prior to treatment if the idea of needles still has you nervous.

No Recovery Time: Again, we know you have a busy life, and the last thing you want to do is be held up in bed for a week or more. While some cosmetic treatments offer more drastic results, they also come with a rather extensive recovery time. If you can’t take time away from work but still want to smooth away wrinkles, then Botox may be your best option.

Follow-up Treatments: Do you just love your new results? Wish they could last forever? While it’s true that Botox is only temporary (usually lasting up to 6 months), you can continue to get follow-up injections every few months to keep your results looking fresh and new.

Coastal Dermatology & Medspa in Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, is dedicated to giving you the more youthful skin you want no matter your age. If you are ready to find out if Botox is right for you, call our office today!

Forehead wrinkles. Crows feet. Frown lines. Dynamic wrinkles often develop from repetitive facial expression, causing these fine lines to appear visible even when the face is totally relaxed.

Wrinkles are a normal part of the aging process. The most common contributors to premature aging of the skin include genetics, spending too much time in the sun, smoking and poor diet.  Avoiding or limiting these activities can help prevent and lessen the effects of wrinkles.

Not all wrinkles can be avoided, and when quick, dramatic results are desired, Botox® may be a viable solution for removing wrinkles on the face caused by daily muscle contraction of your natural facial expressions. Botox® works by temporarily blocking nerve impulses, which reduces the movement of those particular muscles. With less movement, the skin surface is gradually smoothed, the lines begin to fade, and your natural vibrant skin strengthens and returns.

During treatment, very low doses of Botox® are administered by way of small injections. FDA-approved, Botox® is a safe and minimally invasive treatment. It takes just a few minutes and can last about 3-4 months. The effects are not permanent and may need to be repeated as directed by your dermatologist.

If you are interested in learning more about Botox ® cosmetic treatments, contact our office and we will be happy to answer your questions.  Younger looking skin is easily attainable with the help of your dermatologist!
