What causes chronic acne?
Though a pimple every once in a while is a perfectly normal occurrence, this acne is not chronic or severe. Severe, chronic acne often has cysts and nodules, affects a large area of skin, or which leaves significant scarring once healed. At its root, acne comes from the sebaceous glands in the skin producing too much sebum. The extra sebum causes the pores to produce more skin cells which eventually become stuck together by the sebum and clog the pores, creating a pimple. The appearance of acne can be caused by hormonal changes, diet, stress, or even some medications.

Do I have chronic acne?
Chronic acne can occur on the face, chest, back, shoulders, and neck. The blemishes often lie deep under the surface of the skin and become filled with pus or fluid. Blemishes can occur in clusters or on their own, and the acne itself is often painful and causes scarring once healed. The acne cysts can vary in size, from small specks to several centimeters in size. Treating chronic acne will depend on the patient, their medical and family history, any other underlying conditions, and their lifestyle choices.

Treating Chronic Acne in Jacksonville and Pointe Vedra Beach
The goals of treating chronic acne are to clear the acne itself, prevent new scarring from occurring, and help the patients’ overall physical and mental wellness. Often, treatment begins with an oral antibiotic and topical medication applied directly to the acne. If antibiotics fail to produce results, isotretinoin treatments are highly successful in treating severe acne.
