Your habits and daily routine could be impacting the health of your care

We all want healthy, radiant skin, and I think we can agree that most people also want to be able to prevent lines and wrinkles for as long as possible. Of course, this also means giving your skin the proper care it needs to look and feel its best. We know that skin care dos and don’ts can often feel daunting. Our Ponte Vedra Beach and Jacksonville, FL, dermatologist, Dr. Sanjiva Goyal, is here to provide some helpful and easy tips for maintaining healthy skin.

Sun Protection is Vital

Sun damage can happen to anyone, regardless of age. In fact, childhood sunburns can lead to long-term skin problems in the future and increase the likelihood of skin cancer. This is why everyone needs to lather on the sunscreen about 20 minutes before heading outside. Make sure you are using a broad-spectrum sunscreen (that protect against both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF of at least 30. Also, make sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after being in the water.

Avoid Smoking

We all know just how bad smoking can be for your health, but did you know that your skin can also experience some pretty nasty effects from smoking? Unfortunately, smoking leads to premature lines and wrinkles, especially around the mouth. Furthermore, since smoking constricts the blood vessels it means that less blood is flowing to your skin, which also means that tissues aren’t getting the proper nutrients they need. As if this wasn’t reason enough to quit, smoking also hurts both collagen and elastin, which are responsible for keeping your skin smooth, tight, and firm.

Be Gentle on Your Skin

You don’t need to scrub and scrub your skin to get it clean. Using a gentle cleanser and carefully washing your face twice a day is all you need to do to remove bacteria and dead skin from the surface of the skin. Other ways you can be kind to your skin include avoiding certain products with harsh chemicals and soaps, opting for warm instead of hot showers, and moisturizing your skin daily.

Your skin care regimen really depends on the type of skin you have and whether you are prone to certain problems such as eczema, dermatitis, or acne.
