Caring for your skin doesn’t have to be challenging, and your dermatologist can help.

Healthy, clear skin isn’t just luck and genetics, it’s also a sign of your daily routine, your habits and lifestyle. What you do each and every day can have a major impact on your skin, for better or worse. Of course, our Jacksonville and Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, dermatologist Dr. Sanjiva Goyal also understands that there is a ton of information out there about creating the perfect skin care routine. Instead of driving yourself crazy with research, here are some simple things you should know,

Create Your Main, Daily Routine

When it comes to caring for your skin there should be three main components:

  • Cleansing: washing your face with a gentle cleanser
  • Toning: applying a toner, which balances the skin
  • Moisturizing: preventing dryness by applying a moisturizer daily (and yes, even to oily skin)

Yes, it can be that simple. Of course, as you age you will notice that your skin-care routine will also need to change. Perhaps you’ll need products geared towards acne or anti-aging. If you have questions about changing products to accommodate your aging skin our dermatologist here in Jacksonville, FL, would be happy to provide suggestions and recommendations.

Use Sunscreen

One of the best anti-aging tools at your disposal is a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays. It is important that you use sunscreen everyday, even on those cloudy or snowy days (remember, the sun’s rays can still penetrate through clouds and reflect off snow). Apply sunscreen to the face and body about 30 minutes before going outside, opt for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

Catch Those ZZZs

Want radiant, healthy smile? The answer could be hiding in your bed. Getting good, quality sleep every night can do wonders not just for your mood, energy levels and overall health, it can also keep skin looking its best. Not getting enough sleep speeds up the aging process, can cause puffy bags under the eyes and can increase cortisol levels, which can cause psoriasis and other skin conditions to flare-up. So, if you want to keep your skin looking great, make sure you are practicing good sleep habits.

Quit or Avoid Smoking

Might seem like a no-brainer but if you’re looking for (yet another) reason to quit smoking, the health of your skin may be exactly what you need to finally ditch the habit. Along with all the serious health problems that occur as a result of smoking, cigarettes and tobacco can also lead to premature and deep-set lines and wrinkles. Ever heard of smoker’s line? By quitting smoking you can greatly improve the health of your skin for the future.
